This course covers Class 5 Learners (if required), Logbook (if required) and Class 5 Theory and practical test.
Class 5: Unit Standard 17577 (8 credits).
Logbook: Unit Standard 24089 (5 credits).

Course content theory & practical testing includes
DAY 1
(Half-day) Leaner licence
Begin your journey with the Class 5 Learner Licence theory, providing a thorough understanding of road rules and legal obligations for holding a Heavy Combination Vehicle Licence. Once completed, you will head to VTNZ to sit for the learner licence test, ideally on the same day.
DAY 2
(1 day) Logbook - US24089
This module emphasizes the importance of logbook maintenance and compliance for all heavy vehicle drivers, ensuring you’re prepared for the demands of managing a Class 5 Licence. This day includes both theory and test components.
DAY 3-Day 4
(Half-day theory + 2-3 hours practical ) Class 5 Licence - US17577
Dive into the advanced skills required for heavy combination vehicles. This day covers theory followed by a 2–3-hour pre-drive and practical test, giving you the confidence to operate Class 5 vehicles safely and efficiently.
NB: You may be required to complete your drive on Day 4.

What you need to know
Points to note
To obtain your Class 5 you must have held Class 4 for at least 3 months (if over 25 years of age) or at least 6 months if under 25 years of age.
Students MUST have a current medical in order to sit their learner licence.
The initial cost of the learner licence is covered within the course fees. If you fail it, you will need to re-sit the test at your own cost.
Once you have passed your Class 5 Licence, you need to take your certificate and apply to VTNZ or AA to have it put on your licence. This is an additional cost to the student.
Relevant facts
A Class 5 Licence enables you to drive a Heavy Combination Vehicle (truck & trailer) with a gross combined weight of more than 25,000kg.
The cost reduces if you already hold your Class 5 learners.
It is preferred that attendees supply their own vehicle to complete your practical test, which must be loaded to a 50% minimum of its tare weight.
Truck hire is an additional approx $550+gst.
